Estimating the Odds

One of the most confusing things to comprehend for beginning players is the concept of odds. When you watch poker on TV the odds are displayed in the corner, making it easy to discern who is ahead and how likely they are to win. During a real game when the poker cards are in your hands, however, you obviously don’t know your opponents hand or have a neat display letting you know the odds of hitting your draw.

Luckily there is a simple method to help you approximate your odds in Hold ‘Em. Once the flop comes out, figure out how many outs you have to hit your draw—for this example we will use a flush draw. Once you figure out how many outs you have—in this case nine—multiply that number by four. In this scenario you get 36%, which is within a hair of the actual percentage of 35. To figure out your odds after the turn, simply multiply your number of outs by two. While this method is useful, remember there are several other factors to take into consideration, including if your hand will even be good if you hit.
